What a way to close out the year! December was a great month, filled with awesome time spent with young people. Advent is a wonderful time of year, it is hard not to get in the holiday spirit with the emphasis that Liverpool First UMC places on it. The decorations all throughout the downstairs, Christmas tree in the fellowship hall, and Advent candle lighting on Sundays brought all the leaders into the Christmas cheer. With that upbeat attitude, what better way to get excited about sharing Christ with teens on Friday nights?
This month I continued where we left off in the book of Mark, finishing Chapter 9, looking at classic passages where the disciples argue over who is the greatest and Jesus fortelling his death three times. It is always such a joy to watch as young people soak in the scriptures and are transformed by the power of the Spirit speaking through God’s word.
One of the topics we really looked at was how it was God’s will for Jesus to die on the cross. Point blank. And it was no knee jerk reaction, God had ordained this from before we were even on this earth. Even more, this means that God had a plan to save your life from before we were born. God’s will was for Jesus to die, specifically for each of us individually.
In addition to my talks on Mark, Janet Ehrhart opened up the Advent season with a message of hope, sharing about the risen king, Jesus, and urging us to make room in our hearts this year from Him to work in us.
Outside of the spoken word, we got the chance to fulfill God’s commands to have a ministry of mercy within the family of God by serving a member of the congregation in Owego, New York, whose house was damaged by floods. It was a great way to serve God and show the fruits of our faith by being the salt and light. The kids enjoyed getting to bless this house during the holiday season and the cold weather was unable to discourage us! It was a great setup for future service and possibly doing some over nights later in the school year.
The holidays also offered a little break from the LIFE Friday night meetings, which was great to regroup, collect some steam to start a new semester. January is a busy month as I will spend the second half of it in Florida taking a seminary class on Systematic Theology. It should be very informational and useful for my ministry.
But my absence should not slow down our leaders one bit in carrying on with business as usual! Dominique Brown will give a message from her heart and Jesus will still be shared with young people! I am looking forward to getting out of the cold.
