First Sunday in Lent
PRELUDE Partita on “St Flavian” (Theme-Var I‑Var II) — Healey Willan
O Lord Throughout These Forty Days by David Ashley White
CALL TO WORSHIP
One: Happy are the people whose sins are forgiven!
Many: God’s forgiveness is poured on them as a healing balm.
One: Happy are the people who place their trust in God.
Many: God’s presence is their guide and their strength.
One: Come, let us worship the God who forgives and heals us.
Many: Let us celebrate God’s presence with us each day!
Holy and blessed God, we praise your holy name and give thanks for your abundant grace and mercy. As we enter this season of Lent, we desire to center ourselves in the fullness of this moment. We are embarking upon a familiar journey, and yet it is unchartered territory. Free us from the chains of liturgical routine. Awaken us to a deeper experience. Draw us beyond superficial repentance; draw us home to our truest selves, to the beloved community and to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE
HYMN # 398 (verses 1,3 and 5) Jesus Calls Us
Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
QUESTIONS OF FAITH AND LIFE
• Do you feel forgiven for past sins? What changes in your faith are required for this to be true for you?
• What changes in your spiritual life would you like to see this Lent?
• What separates you right now from God’s best for your life?
• Have you been tempted to accept less than God’s best for you?
• Is there something in your life for which more of God’s grace is needed to change that thing?
• Would you like more CAPAX DEI (capacity for God)? What must you do to cooperate with that process?
• How important is God’s Word in your life currently? How can that change?
MESSAGE Change — Discovering God’s Best Plan
Lord Jesus, thank you for loving me in spite of me and for always forgiving me when I truly repent of my sin. Empower me by your Spirit to do the same for others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
BENEDICTION RESPONSE Go Now In Peace by Don Besig
Go now in peace. Never be afraid. God will go with you each hour of every day. Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true. Know He will guide you in all you do. Go now in love, and show you believe. Reach out to others so all the world can see. God will be there watching from above. Go now in peace, in faith, and in love.
