CHORAL INTROIT

O Come Let Us Sing Unto the Lord by Randy Edwards

CALL TO WORSHIP

ONE: Come! All who are feeling hassled and harried. Come, all who have shattered dreams and punctured hopes. Come, for here are springs of joy.

MANY: We come to meet God.

ONE: We gather round, with our lonely hearts and worried brows. We are fragile vessels bearing the hurt of life. Gather round, for here is the love of Christ’s body gathered to
worship our savior.

MANY: On Christ the solid rock we stand!

ONE: God is here. Feel the warmth of his love and the touch of his joy.

MANY: We turn our eyes to Jesus, and worship him with thanksgiving!

OPENING PRAYER

Out of the depths we cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear our cry.  Let your ears be attentive to our supplications. If you, Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you through Jesus Christ. We wait for you, Lord, we wait. In your word we put our hope. In the name of the Good Shepherd, even Jesus the Christ, Amen.

Eye of the Storm by Brian Fowler

WRITTEN WORD Ephesians 6:10–18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

QUESTIONS OF LIFE AND FAITH

 • Why do we need the armor of God?

 • How do we put it on each day?

 • What/Who are the “powers of this dark world” and the “spiritual forces of evil” that we struggle against?

 • What does it look like to “stand your ground” as a believer?

 • What is the shield of faith supposed to do for us? What must we do to raise it up?

 • What does the helmet of salvation protect? Why must that be protected?
