by François Couperin

CONGREGATIONAL INTROIT #328 (sing once)

Surely the Presence of the Lord

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:   O sing to the Lord, all the earth!

People:   Tell of his salvation from day to day.

Leader:   Declare his glory among the nations;

People:   His marvelous works among the peoples.

Leader:   Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised!

People:   Honor and majesty are due him, for he has done great things!

OPENING PRAYER

God of truth and light, help us to enter this time with sincerity of heart and a spirit of gratitude. Keep us firm in the faith we profess. Help us to realize your presence in our midst through our faith in Jesus, your only begotten Son, our Savior and Lord. It is in his name that we pray, Amen.

HYMN #64 Holy, Holy, Holy!

CONGREGATIONAL CALL TO PRAYER #473 Lead Me, Lord

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

FELLOWSHIP CHORUS #526 What a Friend We Have in Jesus

THE WRITTEN WORD Hebrews 4:14–16 and 12:1–3

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  —  New International Version (NIV)

QUESTIONS OF LIFE AND FAITH

 • Is it hard for you to stay focused on Christ’s presence during the day? Why do you think that is so?

 • What does it mean to you to “hold firmly to the faith we profess?”

 • Is it hard for you to approach God “with confidence?” Why do you think that is so?

 • How do you interpret the “great cloud of witnesses?”

 • What spiritual disciplines must we do to “fix our eyes on Jesus?”

 • What makes you “grow weary and lose heart?” What do these scriptures offer as an antidote?
