The Upper New York Conference is facilitating the pastoral transition process with these meetings. Through this process, a congregation receiving a new pastor is assigned a consultant to guide the pastors, church leaders, and congregation members involved in the transition.
The Rev. Bob Kolvik-Campbell from UMC in Sherrill is our pastoral transition consultant. In the meetings he will help pastors, leaders, and congregations be aware of the normal grieving process, help us say goodbye in a healthy way, and help us get off to a great start with a new relationship.
Our new pastor, Bob Vizthum, who arrives July 1 and gives his first sermon July 7, will be with us in the meetings.

Consider giving to the church with your IRA Save on taxes
by Rich Ertinger, LFUMC Financial Secretary
A possible income tax saving strategy for your offerings to our church, or any charitable organization, is to utilize your IRA. If you are age 70 and 1/2, or older, and have an IRA, federal law requires that you make an annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) withdrawal from your IRA account. Instead of taking all of your RMD yourself, you can ask your bank, brokerage, or financial institution that manages your IRA, to send a portion of the RMD directly to a qualified charitable organization (our church is qualified). Doing this will reduce your reported income for the year, which then reduces your income taxes and perhaps even drops you into a lower tax bracket. This strategy became popular for the 2018 tax year when the federal standard deduction was increased to the point where itemizing deductions was no longer the best path for many people.
If you decide that this strategy works for your personal financial situation, it probably makes sense to fulfill your pledge to the church via a single annual payment, as opposed to weekly, or even monthly, offerings. The main point to remember is that the payment from your IRA must be made directly to the charity, not to you, in order for this to comply with federal tax laws.
