Fifth Sunday after Easter

PRELUDE Bound For the Promised Land             Wesley Bell Ringers

CONGREGATIONAL INTROIT #405 Seek Ye First

CALL TO WORSHIP

One: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights above.

All: Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

One: Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars.

All: Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.

One: Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created. He set them in place for ever and ever; he gave a decree that will never pass away.

All: Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,  lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds,

One: Praise the Lord you rulers of the earth and all nations, young men and maidens, old men, women and children.

All: Let us praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.

One: Praise the Lord all you whom he has called, for you are the people close to his heart. Praise the Lord.

HYMN #62 All Creatures of Our God and King (verses 1, 4–7)

OPENING PRAYER Alpha and Omega, you make your home with us, you dry our tears and quench our thirst, you are the tender love that welcomes all people. Like a mother, you nurture your children, giving them life, teaching them to love. Come and dwell among us, and make all things new. Amen.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE & SONG This Little Light of Mine

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We believe in God, Creator of the shoreline and mountain range, who fashions a world of beauty, splashes it with color, renews it with rain and blesses it with sun; who made us to see and appreciate the variety around us and calls us to delight and cherish; who turns darkness into day, despair into hope and dead ends into living options. We believe in the risen Christ still present to each of us, turning our eyes from death to life, beckoning us to look up and out to see beauty in creation, to look into the eyes of another and know they too are God’s beloved, to look into a mirror and see ourselves loved and cherished. We believe in the Holy Spirit, mysterious yet as real as the wind, a force for good, for justice, for reconciliation; blowing away hatred and fear, stirring up the dull and bored, kindling hope and joy. We believe. God, help us live as Easter people.

GLORIA PATRI #70  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to
the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen!

Because he lives  I can face tomorrow. Because he lives all fear is

PRESENTATION OF OUR GIFTS Majesty, Worship His Majesty

Majesty, worship His majesty! Unto Jesus be all glory, honor and praise. Majesty, kingdom authority, flow from His throne unto His own, His anthem raise! So exalt lift up on high the name of Jesus. Magnify, come glorify, Christ Jesus the King. Majesty, worship His majesty! Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all kings!

WRITTEN WORD Acts 11. 1–18The apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.” Peter began and explained everything to them precisely as it had happened: “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was. I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds of the air. Then I heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’ “I replied, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ “The voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’  This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again. “Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.’ “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’  So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?” When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.”  — NIV

QUESTIONS OF LIFE & FAITH

• Is there a “wrong crowd” we should avoid?

• How can we be sure the company we keep does not corrupt our values?

• Where do we strike a balance between relating to unbelievers and the family of God?

PRAYER OF PREPARATION Open our ears to hear your Word proclaimed in this place. Open our hearts to know your Love offered in this congregation. Open our eyes to see your Presence blessing us in this moment.

SPIRITUAL CONVERSATION Loving Others FOR Jesus! Dr. Brian Homan

PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of all people, our hearts are too narrow, our perspectives are too small. We reject those who are not like us—those with different political opinions, those who struggle with mental illness, those who disagree with us. We neglect your call to love one another and those who are different than us. Forgive us, O God, for the many ways we have failed to be a people known by our love. Show us how to be more caring. Teach us how to love one another, and make us faithful disciples. Amen.

CHALLENGE & SENDING FORTH

One: Jesus gave a new commandment: to love one another.
All: Because Jesus loves us, we should love one another.
One: Go forth to serve. Go forth to love.
All: We go with God’s love and blessing.
