HYMN OF PRAISE #549 verses 1–5 Where Charity and Love Prevail

COMMON PRAYER

Inexhaustible source of love and life, be with us in our time of worship as we seek the love it takes to walk in the ways of your Son. Help us love our enemies and bless those who wrong us, for we cannot do so alone. Teach us the joy of treating others with all the same respect and goodness with which we hope to be treated. May our every word and deed make known that we are your beloved children and vessels of your love. Amen.

PRESENTATION OF OUR GIFTS

We give thee but thine own what e’er The gift may be; all that we have is thine alone a trust, O Lord, from thee. May we thy bounties thus as stewards true receive, and gladly as thou blessest us, to thee our first-fruits give.

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

FELLOWSHIP CHORUS #2226 Bind Us Together

Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together with cords that cannot be broken; Bind us together, Lord, bind us together, bind us together in love. There is only One God! There is only One King! There is only One Body! That is why we sing! Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together with cords that cannot be broken; Bind us together, Lord, bind us together, bind us together in love.

WRITTEN WORD Luke 6. 27–38

“But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” — NIV

All: Thanks be to God

QUESTIONS OF LIFE AND FAITH

 •  Would responding to difficult people in the way that Jesus prescribes only reinforce their bad behavior?

 •  Are there limits to what abuse we should take from others?

 •  Isn’t it healthy to form and communicate definitive boundaries?

 •  What’s your approach to people who need help or correction?
