SPIRIT SONG No. 2088 (FWSLord, I Lift Your Name on High

OPENING PRAYER

God of life, present and promised, you are the One to whom we call: for you are the One who hears, and you are the One who acts, bringing us new life with your grace and love and power. Lead us in our time of worship, that we may be prepared to follow your lead in places where life is at risk—places where hope seems far away, places where dreams die during sleep. When we leave these walls, help us live the teachings we proclaim within this place of worship, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN No. 2175 (FWS)                        Together We Serve

PRAYER OF CONFESSION and COMMITMENT

God, we want our life to be good – this is after all — all we have. We want our life to be filled with joy for we know this life won’t last. We hear your promise that we will continue beyond death but we are afraid to surrender what the present might offer. We confess we have held on to this life and it defines us. There are dangers to our wellbeing that only by following you we can avoid and there are directions you point us toward that you promise will offer hope of a fuller life. Accepting your way demands a great deal of trust from us which we confess we are not always willing to give. You ask us to lose ourselves in Jesus promising we will then find our true selves; to deny what we want for the moment in order to find what is most valuable and meaningful. You ask us to bear the cross of limitation and suffering we have known, or even to accept struggle by seeking what you want. This is hard and we know we have failed to follow you as we have wanted or promised. Give us courage to seek your kingdom and your righteous ways trusting you will provide everything else we long for most in this life and more in the life to come. We pray as Jesus taught us …
